Prof. Yaw Adu-Sarkodie is a distinguished clinical microbiologist and epidemiologist whose career spans decades of impactful research, teaching, and public health service. He holds BMedSci (Hons), BSc, MBChB, MSc, DipGUMed, DLSHTM, MWACP, FGCP, and PhD, reflecting his broad academic and professional training in medicine, microbiology, and epidemiology.
Over the years, Prof. Adu-Sarkodie has held several key leadership roles at KNUST, including Hall Master, Head of Department, Vice-Dean, Dean of the School of Medicine and Dentistry, and Provost of the College of Health Sciences. At the university level, he has served on high-level policy-making bodies such as the Executive Committee, Academic Board, Appointments and Promotions Committee, and the Quality Assurance Committee. A strong advocate for inclusivity, he has chaired the University’s Committees on Gender, Disability, and Health and Safety, and currently chairs the Vice-Chancellor’s Enterprise Development Board, which fosters partnerships and funding opportunities to strengthen the university’s financial sustainability.
At the KNUST-IVI Collaborative Centre, Prof. Adu-Sarkodie plays a pivotal role in advancing research on infectious diseases. He leads the design and implementation of epidemiological studies and surveillance systems that address critical public health concerns. His work involves meticulous data analysis, applying appropriate statistical methods to evaluate and interpret research findings, and translating these into actionable insights. In addition to his research, he provides administrative guidance, contributes to special investigations, and engages in both descriptive and analytical studies that strengthen the Centre’s evidence base.
A dedicated mentor, Prof. Adu-Sarkodie supervises and co-supervises graduate students at both PhD and MPhil levels, supporting their research design, data analysis, and thesis production. His expertise and leadership have shaped the careers of many young scientists and contributed significantly to capacity building in infectious disease research.
Prof. Adu-Sarkodie’s scholarly contributions have informed national and international policies in infectious disease prevention, diagnosis, and control. His research continues to influence the development of interventions that improve health outcomes, particularly in resource-limited settings.
